Every year, 1 in 3 Veterans’ disability claims are denied, leaving them without access to the support they need. And all too often, valid claims are denied due to VA legal errors, flawed medical records, or overly complicated procedures and deadlines. Right now, there are thousands of Veterans across the country who need legal help to appeal their denied claim.

Beyond helping a deserving Veteran, attorneys with our Pro Bono Partners who take on Denied Claims cases gain appellate litigation experience, and build skills writing briefs and negotiating with opposing counsel during a settlement hearing. Learn more.

Too many service members receive an “Other than Honorable” discharge after they exhibit behavioral symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or Military Sexual Trauma (MST). Unfortunately, this discharge rating means they may not be able to access VA healthcare or receive disability compensation. They may not even have the right call themselves 'Veterans.'

Volunteer attorneys from our Pro Bono Partners typically work in small teams, conducting research, locating records, and obtaining better-informed medical opinions to demonstrate the connection between the servicemember’s invisible wounds and the actions that led to their discharge. Learn more.

Beyond the challenges all Veterans face, Veterans who are women face additional threats to their health and wellbeing.
  • 1 in 3 experience Military Sexual Trauma (MST)
  • Women Veterans are 2x as likely to have PTSD
  • And 4x more likely to become homeless
To help, The Veterans Consortium trains Women attorneys to file claims with VA for disability compensation. Woman attorneys support Women Veterans as they fight the ongoing impacts of MST, combat homelessness and poverty, and challenge health care disparities. To help Women Veterans with civil issues, Women Attorneys can also volunteer for one of our virtual advice and referral clinics. Email us!

Did you know that legal residents who are not U.S. citizens can serve in America’s Armed Forces? And once they become Veterans, these service members can have their U.S. Citizenship application fast-tracked. But many struggle with the complicated forms, specific documentation requirements, and reporting technicalities. That’s where pro bono attorneys with The Veterans Consortium step up to help these patriots through the frustrating paperwork. Attorneys and Veterans alike can contact.vnap@vetsprobono.org to learn more about our Veterans Naturalization Assistance Program!

We regularly hold free virtual and in-person legal advice and referral clinics for Veterans residing in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

In partnership with D.C.’s Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, these events give local Veterans and their family members easy access to legal advice and referrals for civil and contractual legal matters, such as employment, housing, and contract law. We do not provide assistance for criminal matters.

Local attorneys interested in volunteering can contact Hayley Wolf at hayley.wolf@vetsprobono.org for more information.
